As an African American, I agree that Gwyneth's use of the N-word was inappropriate, and well she should know better. If not then I think Bey and Jay need to sit down and have a nice long chat with their friend and educate her. I understand that she was hyped...having a good time with her friends who happen to also be African American singing the song "Ni@*as in Paris", but come on...to have the balls to tweet that and think it was okay.....well I have two words for you sweetie - Not.Cool.
To be honest, I think this is Us as African Americans braving a double standard. If u can name a song , Ni**as in Paris, then why can't age tweet it? The tweet is no more or less distasteful as the title of the song. I bet JayZ, Kanye, and her are laughing, cuz when u get in their earning circle some things are socially accepted.
ReplyDeleteWell I'll say when I saw it I was not even offended. The word is tossed around so much in Hip Hop culture that it has taken on additional meaning. Not to say we forget about it's origin however she didn't use it in that context and we know that especially with her being BlueIvys Godmother. All in all if we want respect for not being called a N we all need to be cautious about how we use it. Which is one reason I don't take offense to it. StyleDIVA
ReplyDeleteI don't think any of us should use it, save a scholarly context. Telling others not to read a song title isn't the issue - why is it in the song title? That's the issue to me. That logic works about as well as telling your children to "do as I say, not as I do." Paltrow is far from the issue in this one, but the incident brings an issue to the forefront that should have been squashed decades ago. Is anyone suggesting that folks don't buy the records or the concert tickets if they aren't black?
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with the StyleDIVA! WE need to watch how we use the word if we want respect and for others not to use it. I wasn't offended at all. Especially in the context of her tweet. She was in Paris...and they were actually performing (or had just performed) the hit titled, N****s in Paris!! Being a friend to Jay-Z and Beyonce & Blue Ivy's Godmother, she was just hype!! I think there are other things we can find fault with...this is not one of them.
